Being one of the lesser-known treks, also because it is nestled in the hidden corners of Nepal, you will be able to witness breathtaking landscapes and surreal beauty along with varieties of flora fauna, including some endangered species, thus offering an experience of what our expert called — Himalayan Shankaracharya tour. Dolpo is a place that protrudes during the Nepal Monsoon before belonging to Shey Phoksundo National Park, which highlights the world’s lovely turquoise blue largest natural Lake called Phoksundo with sheer pristine water, including ancient Bon and Buddhist monasteries.

In the mornings, you will be treated to awesome sunrises over snow-capped peaks and interesting hikes while meandering through isolated hamlets in this desolate land where yak herders could lead a nomadic existence. The trek was a nice mix of adventure and cultural experience through the most remote high Himalayas.

The Lower Dolpo Trek package includes full-day sightseeing tours of Kathmandu Valley arranged and well-managed by a guiding team. Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu 1350m.

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Amazing Himalaya will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. After check-in, take some time to rest and explore the nearby areas. Enjoy your free time in Kathmandu and dive into the historical landmarks and vibrant local markets.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu & Trek Permit Preparation

Before starting the adventurous trekking to Lower Dolpo. We will begin our day with a full day guided sightseeing tour in Kathmandu, by visiting different UNESCO listed World Heritage sites

Beginning our sightseeing tour in Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), A religious site overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, offering panoramic views of  the city.

Kathmandu Durbar Square, the historic center with temples, palaces, and courtyards showcasing traditional architecture.

Patan Durbar Square another prominent must visit site of Kathmandu, renowned for its beautiful courtyards, temples, and traditional Newari art and architecture.

While you enjoy sightseeing around Kathmandu our team will be preparing your trekking permits for Lower Dolpo and Phoksundo National Park.

Day 3: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj

Starting our adventurous journey towards Lower Dolpo, we will be taking a one hour flight from Kathmandu To Nepalgunj(150m), located near the Indian border in southwestern Nepal. Nepalgunj is a bustling town with a diverse cultural blend of Nepalese and Indian influences, which you can experience through its vibrant markets, food, and local customs.

After checking in to the hotel you can either explore the vibrant markets  or just unwind at your hotel. Enjoy an overnight stay in Nepalgunj.

Day 4: Fly to Juphal and Trek to Dunai (2,140m)

On the fourth day of our trek, we will start with an early morning flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal(2,475m), a small mountain airstrip in Dolpo.

After reaching Juphal, meet your porters, arrange baggage, and the trek towards Dunai will (2,140m) begin.Before reaching Dunai we will Follow a scenic trail through terraced fields, apple orchards, and local villages. I Arrived in Dunai, the district headquarters of Dolpo. After a 3-4 hour journey, settle in for the night at a trekker’s lodge, where you can rest and prepare for the next day’s adventure.

Day 5: Trek from Dunai to Tarakot (2,537m)

Start trekking towards our next destination Tarakot(2,537m), alongside the Bheri River, passing through picturesque terraced fields and small settlements. The trail is relatively flat as it follows the river, providing an excellent introduction to the local culture and landscape.

Day 6: Trek from Tarakot to Laini (3,160m)

Start with an easy ascent where you trek through pine, rhododendron and spruce forest. You will cross several suspension bridges and walk through scenic river gorges enroute to Laini.

The path is rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Take a rest and overnight stay at the trekkers’ lodge after 6-7 hours trekking

Day 7: Trek from Laini to Nawarpani (3,475m)

Continue trekking alongside the Tarap River, crossing several suspension bridges. The trail turns more rugged and remote, with a mix of steep climbs and descents. You’ll pass through narrow gorges and beneath towering cliffs, adding an adventurous feel to the journey.
After 5-6 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Nawarpani, a small, quiet settlement where you’ll rest for the night at a trekkers’ lodge.

Day 8: Trek from Nawarpani to Dho Tarap (3,944m)

The next stage is to ensure Nawarpani — Dho Tarap (3944m) the trail begins ascending as you approach higher altitudes. Enroute, the trail traverses narrow gorges and desolate landscapes with breathtaking views of Dolpo.

A 7-8 hours of walk will reach you to Dho Tarap, one among the very high human settlements in the world with well-preserved traditional Tibetan culture. After dark, spend the night at a lodge and take in this contrasting remote village.

Day 9: Acclimatization Day in Dho Tarap

The ninth day of Lower Dolpo Trek is for acclimatizing to the altitude which is very important. You can spend a day exploring the village, visit local monasteries Ribo Bhmpa Gompa and interact with the welcoming locals.

Day 10: Trek from Dho Tarap to Numa La Basecamp (4,440m)

Start your trek by slowly climbing up to Numa La Basecamp, where you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the mountains. The landscape gets more barren as you go higher, but the rugged hills and valleys are still stunning.
After a 6-7 hour trek, you’ll reach the basecamp, where you can rest and get ready for the challenging pass crossing tomorrow. You’ll camp overnight at Numa La Basecamp under the starry sky.

 

Day 11: Cross Numa La Pass (5,190m) and Trek to Danighar (4,630m)

Today is both challenging and rewarding as you start the ascent to Numa La Pass, reaching an altitude of 5,190 meters. Although it involves a tough climb, the stunning vista toward the snow-capped mountains and surrounding landscapes will make you feel like home in heaven. The pass will be crossed and you then start descending to Danighar, where your campsite is established for the night. Have a night stay at Danighar on camp after a trek of 6-7 hrs.

Day 12: Cross Baga La Pass (5,070m) and Trek to Yak Kharka (3,820m)

Another challenging day as you cross the Baga La Pass at an elevation of 5,070m. Enjoy more spectacular views of mountain ranges, including Mount Dhaulagiri and other peaks. After crossing the pass, descend to Yak Kharka, a summer grazing ground for yaks.

Day 13: Trek from Yak Kharka to Phoksundo Lake (3,611m)

Starting the trek toward Phoksundo Lake, walking through beautiful forests and traditional Tibetan-style villages. As you arrive at the stunning Phoksundo Lake, you’ll be amazed by its turquoise waters and the pristine landscapes surrounding it. This lake is sacred to Buddhists, and nearby Ringmo Village is known for preserving ancient Bon culture. After a 5-6 hour trek, settle in for the night at a trekkers’ lodge

Day 14: Rest Day at Phoksundo Lake

Take a well-deserved rest day at Phoksundo Lake, enjoy your rest day surrounded by the breathtaking view. You can relax and recharge yourself for further journeys or visit the Tshowa Monastery, located above the lake, and the nearby Ringmo Village. Spend the day soaking in the serene beauty of this remote region.

Day 15: Trek from Phoksundo Lake to Shyanta (2,520m)

After breakfast, start your descent along a different route. Enjoy the beautiful scenery as you trek for 6-7 hours. Once you arrive, settle in for the night at a trekkers’ lodge in Shyanta.

Day 16: Trek from Shyanta to Juphal

Today marks the final day of your trek as you return to Juphal. Today’s trek is relatively short, around 4 to 5 hours, allowing you to take in your last views of the mountains and landscapes. Upon reaching Juphal, relax in the peaceful atmosphere and reflect on your trekking adventure.

 

Day 17: Fly from Juphal to Nepalgunj and Onward Flight to Kathmandu 

Take an early morning flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj. From Nepalgunj, board your flight back to Kathmandu. After arrival, check in to your hotel for rest.

Day 18: Leisure Day in Kathmandu

Spend the day at your leisure in Kathmandu. Enjoy your free time at hotel or optional sightseeing, shopping, or cultural experiences are available.

Day 19: Final Departure

Today is the final day of the adventurous trek, depending on your flight schedule, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your final departure. Bid farewell to Nepal with unforgettable memories of the Dolpo trek.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Upper Dolpo trek features a range of altitudes, with the highest points reaching around 5,300 meters (17,388 feet) at passes like Kang La Pass. The trek typically starts at around 2,500 meters (8,200 feet), and trekkers will experience various elevations throughout the journey.

The Lower Dolpo Trek is considered moderately challenging. It requires good physical fitness and previous trekking experience due to high altitudes and rugged terrain.
