The sites we visit today are Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Stupa, and Boudhanath Stupa, all of which are listed as World Heritage sites by UNESCO.
The Kathmandu Durbar Square illuminates the life of the royals in ancient times. The major highlight is Kumari Ghar, the home of the living goddess Kasthamandap Temple, made from a single tree.
The Pashupatinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, holds immense significance for Hindus and is considered one of the most sacred places in the world. Devotees from around the globe visit Nepal to offer prayers at this revered site. The temple’s atmosphere is deeply spiritual, with various rituals and ceremonies taking place around its ancient premises, offering a glimpse into the rich religious traditions and cultural practices that have thrived here for centuries.
Another prominent site is Swayambhunath, which is on top of a hill and has historical significance associated with the foundation of Kathmandu Valley.
The Boudhanath Stupa is one of the largest stupas and a major tourist attraction in Kathmandu. Shaped like a mandala, this UNESCO World Heritage site exudes spiritual energy despite the lively atmosphere around it. The area may be bustling, but you’ll find peace as Tibetan chants and mantras resonate through the air, creating a serene experience for all who visit.
After breakfast at the hotel, we will start on a one-hour drive to Sundarijal, where your trek to Helambu Gosaikunda officially begins. The initial part involves an uphill walk to Chisopani. The trail passes through the Shivpuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve, entering the first settlement, Mulkharka, inhabited by Tamang. Descend through an oak and rhododendron forest to reach Chisopani. Overnight stay at a trekkers’ lodge.
The journey starts with a descent from Chisopani, winding through the peaceful village of Pathi Bhanjyang before reaching the charming hamlet of Gul Bhanjyang. From there, the trail takes you up a ridge, offering stunning views as you climb towards another mountain pass. After a day of trekking through diverse landscapes, you’ll finally arrive at Kutumsang. Settle in for the night at a cozy trekkers’ lodge, where you can relax and soak in the mountain serenity.
After breakfast, start your trek to Tharepati, a journey lasting about six hours. The trail continues north, ascending the Yurin Danda ridge, providing stunning views of the surrounding mountain peaks. As you ascend, the path leads through steep and eroded trails, primarily through fir and rhododendron forests where permanent settlements are sparse. The day’s trek concludes upon reaching Tharepati. Overnight stay at a Trekkers Lodge.
After enjoying breakfast at the lodge, begin your trek to Phedi. The trail descends slightly, leading through a flat terrain with oak and bamboo forests. Stop for lunch in Ghopte before continuing the trek to Phedi. Spend the night at a trekkers’ lodge.
Today is a special day for the Helambu Gosaikunda Trek. After breakfast, you set out to follow a ridge, which offers panoramic views throughout the day. As you trek, you’ll catch sight of the first of the holy lakes, with Saraswati Kunda and Bhairab Kunda leading you to the serene Gosaikunda Lake.
Nestled at 4,380 meters, Gosaikunda is not only surrounded by towering mountains but holds deep religious and cultural significance for the Nepalese people. It’s a major pilgrimage site, especially during the Janai Purnima festival in August, when hundreds of Hindu pilgrims come to take a holy dip. The lake is part of an ensemble of nine other nearby lakes, and the large rock in its center is believed to be the remnants of a Shiva shrine, adding to the spiritual atmosphere. You’ll spend the night by the lake, resting after a meaningful day.
After enjoying a hearty breakfast in Gosaikunda, you’ll begin your descent, leaving behind the serene lake. The trail takes you through Lauribinayak, where you’ll be treated to breathtaking mountain views that stretch across the horizon. As you continue, you’ll pass through lush, green forests filled with the sounds of nature. After a fulfilling day of trekking, you’ll rest for the night at a cozy trekkers’ lodge, recharging for the adventure ahead.
After breakfast, commence your trek with the trail descending through pine, oak, and rhododendron forests. Passing through various settlements along the way, you will ultimately arrive in Dhunche, a small town and the headquarters of the Rasuwa district. Spend the night at a trekkers’ lodge.
